In my research, I intend to implement a BlackBerry Application that wirelessly backs up your data, while at the same time allowing the user to store the data on their own hardware. This application will provide an alternative to the wired backup used by the BlackBerry Desktop Manager. The backup process will first have the user go to a website and enter their phone number and email. They are texted a download link to the backup application for their BlackBerry device. After the application downloads their information (contacts, calendars, etc.) to the backup server, the user is told to check their email for their data which is in the form of an ipd file. The BlackBerry application that downloads the user’s information from their phone will be written in Java and tested on a simulator prior to usage. When the user is ready to restore their information they will visit the backup website again, only this time they will enter their phone number and upload the ipd file they were emailed (asked to browse their computer for the file). In conclusion, this application will allow users to wirelessly backup their information. The application is very versatile because the user can use the BlackBerry Desktop Manager to restore their files as well. This application comes in handy if the user has a defective BlackBerry device that can no longer connect via a wired connection, if the user doesn’t have cables to connect, etc.
