Under the leadership of Dr. Selina Vasquez Mireles Mathematics Professor and her Staff at Texas State University a new evidence-based Mathematical Educational model is being implemented and currently researched.  The goal of the Mathematics Co-Requisite program known as Texas State’s Fundamentals of Conceptual Understanding and Success(FOCUS) is to help our Developmental Math Students to master the mathematical concepts needed to successfully pass their Developmental Courses while being concurrently enroll in credit-bearing Math Courses at the same time.  The success of this program has been very positive and enticing, that several Latino Community College Serving Institutions around Texas are currently piloting this program with very promising results also.  El Paso Community College (EPCC) is dedicated to serving its community and this is why we are active participants and supporters of this research program.  Of course, all of this has been possible with the support and help of Complete College America (CCA), Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board, and Texas State’s FOCUS Programs.  Here at EPCC Tenured Professors Gabriel Mendoza and Ivette Chuca have been implementing, teaching, and researching the benefits of this program with the priceless help of adjunct mathematics faculty Oscar Macedo and Efren Alvarado.  Finally, with our research we want to serve as a model and mentor for other institutions in order for them to permanently implement this type of opportunities for their students.
